How your support makes a difference

Tom is a 38 year old local man who became homeless 2 years ago after losing his job and his flat, when his landlord refused to accept Housing Benefit. He stayed with friends for a while, but his options ran out and he ended up sleeping rough in Bristol.

He started using Novas Scarman’s New Street Centre on a daily basis for a shower, a change of clothes, and cheap hot food from the cafe.

Sleeping rough affected his health, and he used the GP and nurse clinics at the Centre to gain medical care and advice. Alongside this, he spent time talking with staff, they assisted him to access temporary accommodation and longer term housing.

By using the computer facilities and attending the weekly art group, Tom started to rebuild his confidence and offered to volunteer in the Centre café. Following training he became a regular volunteer.

Through mentoring and encouragement of staff he extended his duties to a wider range of tasks within the Centre, developing his skills and self-esteem.

Tom has recently moved into his own place. He no longer uses the Centre, but still volunteers 3 days week. He has gained employment at a local housing project and is shortly to join the Novas Scarman locum pool.
