Rebuilding Lives

Rebecca (not her real name) came to one of our refuges in Feb 07. She had spent the previous year not leaving her house due to fear of a perpetrator.

The previous ten years had been a living nightmare for Rebecca. She had been regularly beaten up; on one occasion it was serious enough for her to have a stroke. The situation got even worse when one evening her house was broken into and the perpetrator raped her.

She desperately needed help and was offered a space in our refuge through ringing the Rape Crisis line.

Rebecca now feels as safe as she ever has, but still has problems with her sight and is still going for hospital tests. Our staff have helped her to claim benefits, sign up with a GP, referred her to counselling and ultimately have encouraged her to have hope for the future. She is now looking for voluntary work in journalism to resume the career she started out in.
